The Rat Rod fad is a little played out in my opinion, but I still think they are cool, and there aren't many wheelers built that way. I think the concept I have is a great recipe for a wheeler with a lot of character. I'm going to start a build thread in here for now. I want to keep it on the DL for a while, at least until real progress is made.

I will be using the 6bt, NV4500HD, a Ford king pin d60 front axle, and a 14 bolt rear that I already have. A 2 speed Atlas will be bought before finishing the chassis work.

Here's the "gem" I'm starting with. Matt West told me about it last summer. The process of buying it from the estate was slow, but I finally got the title for it a couple months ago.

The original idea was something for Eric and I to tinker on, but once I got it home I realized that it wasn't worth restoring. That's good though, because I don't feel bad about chopping it up for a wheeler. Here's a pic of it coming apart in the shop.

The only Power Wagon parts I'm keeping are the cab and the front nose sheet metal. Hopefully I'll be able to sell the rest to a collector/restorer. Here's some of the awesomeness 60 years of hack repairs gets you. 110v light switches and wire nuts FTW.

The first thing I need to do is lay out the drivetrain to get dimensions before starting the chassis. Basically, I'm building around the cab, so I needed to make it useable. The bottom of the cab was rotten and I wanted to simplify the build by eliminating body mounts. The cab will be built right into the chassis. The first major work was removing the rusty floor and adding structure to build off of. For reference, the cab weighed 384lbs with the windsheild, wiper motors, and heater. Here's the cab before cutting.

I wanted to raise the rocker height up to gain some ground clearance. That also gave me a chance to chop off the old junk. I decided to take 6" off the bottom of the cab, and raise the door sill by 2". Here's the slot I cut for 2" square tube to fit in. I will shorten the doors at a later date.

At some point in the distant past, the back of the cab had been overlayed with a piece of sheetmetal. That repair combined with 60 years of hard labor and rust resulted in the cab wall separating from the cab floor. Previous owners had attempted other failed repairs, and now it was time to fix it.

The old doubled cab wall was cut out, and the "newer" plate was tacked to the original structure to stiffen it back up. I also added a strongback across the bottom where my cut line would be to give the cab more rigidity after it was cut.

To keep the cab shape, I also welded in some 1" square tube corner to corner, and also welded to the strongback attached to the cab wall.

After the 2" square tube was tacked in, I finished the floor cut and pulled it off of the crusty floor. I also cut out some of the firewall. I'm pretty sure most of the firewall will be removed, but for now its enough.

With the fresh new steel added, the cab sits perfectly flat on the fab bench, something it didn't do with the original floor.

With the new cab structure added and the windshield out, it was a lot lighter.

I'll be taking the cab to my garage this week to experiment with engine placement. Then I'll get started building the chassis. :rock:

Because of the weight of the Cummins, I'm leaning towards .188 wall 2" x 4" rec. tube for the main rails.

Finally moved the cab to the garage to work out engine/axle layout. The engine still needs to move up and back a couple inches. The front axle will also move back a couple. I'm using a Dodge dana 60 for a prop, but the Ford axle I have will actually fit better on the driver side due to the shape of the engines accessory gear drive cover. This is 112" WB. It will be a few shorter.

This is gonna be awesome. The cab is sitting at "on the bumps" height. Ride height will be about 7" higher.

Not much new progress, but more messing around with mocking-up my concept. I cut more of the firewall out to put the engine where I want it to be. I also drew up my chassis design on graph paper(old school, no solidworks here!), and bought some material.

The original hood and grill shell are very narrow, skinnier than a CJ nose, and will be reused. But I'm not sure where the headlights will end up yet, since they were mounted on the fenders. That will be decide later I guess.

I'm hoping to start on some chassis work this weekend so there's more than just make-believe happening in this thread. :mrgreen:

My Dad has three of those trucks right now. One of them is in really good shape, but he won't part with it :thumbsdown: . Same cab as the Power Wagons.

Didn't get much done this weekend. I spent most of it working on my house instead of the Dodge. I did get a little done on the frame though. The "core" of the chassis will be 2"x 4" .120 rec tube to support the weight and torque of the Cummins. The rest of it will be 1 3/4" DOM.

I thought about using 2" DOM for all of the primary cage structure to meet SCORE rules (its probably going to be over 4500 lbs), but the cost of the bigger tubing and a new die for our bender kinda ruled that out.

John M., give me a long term review on your FOA's when you get back from Moab. A purchase is a ways off still, but they still seem like a good deal. I'm going to look at Fox, Radflo, and Sway-Away's too, but FOA is making some cheap 3" Bypasses.

Overall I'm very happy with the FOA's. They've now been on my rig for four years, and seen a little bit of abuse. Rebuilding them is on my to-do list for this summer as the seals are just starting to seep a little oil, I called Chris up and he sent me all the spherical bearings, seals, etc. to do them for like $30.
