I spent some time trying yo figure out what "channel" PNWJ uses, and after some searches, all I found was that after a group buy, John programs them??

Do I need to do more than just tune in some particular frequency(s) to hear you folks?

thanks

Did you get this working? Is this still the "go to" hand held? I'd like to buy one of these for next time I tag along with this group. It sucked being the one without comm's on my last outing with you guys.

Yes, it works great. I bought a slightly different antennae, "they" whoever they are, say it works better. But it worked fine with the stock one. The people with "real" radios and external antennae talk amazing distances, but if you are running with a group of 3-10 jeeps, the handheld has no problem at all.

John and/or the club pay money for the frequency they reserved, so you have to talk to john to get that. Just tell him you like orange and I bet he'll tell you the freq.

you want to get one of these
http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Programmi ... ge_o06_s00

so you can hook it to your computer and set up all the standard channels

and this is the one I got:
http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-136-174-4 ... ge_o07_s00

with this
http://www.amazon.com/ExpertPower-XP-66 ... ge_o06_s00

I'm a VHF novice but want a better solution than the very short range of my CB. My concern is distance through heavy wooded areas. Please tell me about that. Also, do I need any special operators license to use this?

Can you not use a Firestik with these?

Thanks,

Myself and a buddy just bought a couple of those $30 handhelds off Amazon. They came in yesterday and we found out we could talk to each other from our couches in our living rooms. :roflmao: He lives 3 miles from me driving so probably 2 miles as a crow flies. It was pretty hilarious. We both plan to buy the actual "race radio" setups for our Jeeps and we'll keep these little f'ers for the tow rigs, spotters, lone people without cool radios.

No, we don't have a special license.

Any reason you went with the 7.5 inch antenna vs the 14.5 inch? Is there an advantage to the longer whip? I think Drae said it shoots out the signal in a longer wavelength and carries further. Ya?

John, do you have time to order another radio prior to KOH?

I'm putting an order together now to half a half dozen or so units in stock plus some extra accessories/whips/cables, etc.

Thanks. I'd like a mag mount and a flush mount antenna please.
