Post subject:  Advice on a 2WD to 4WD Conversion

Hi All,

I have a 1991 XJ Cherokee with factory 5-sp and 4.0 HO. Thinking about doing a 4WD conversion. Can anyone tell me what parts I should look for and if my AX15 would work>

Thanks

Easiest to find a complete donor rig. You'll need transmission, transfer case, axle obviously, drive shaft, t-case shifter, mechanism, mounting plate, etc.

Its a pretty simple swap all things considering. I complete two comanches from 2wd to 4wd. I found it easiest to buy a crashed cherokee or one that has a blown motor and swap the needed parts over.

Your 2wd transmission will not work. the housings are different for a 2wd and 4wd on cherokees.

This is a quick list I may forget a part or two but its close.
1. 4wd Front axle complete
2. Front drive shaft (automatics and manual transmissions are different lengths FYI)
3. 4wd Transmission most likely a manual in your case.
4. Transfercase
5. Rear drive shaft from a 4wd or have someone cut down your 2wd shaft.
6. 4wd shifter mechanism. There already is a hole in the jeep for it to mount to.

If I'm forgetting anything I'm sorry but its a quick list.
