Posted on August 20, 2013 by Clay Graham ("Ceg")

U.S. FOREST SERVICE FIRE UPDATE

Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

Wenatchee, WA 98801
For immediate release:
August 20, 2013—4:00 p.m.

Naches Ranger District Front Office, 509-653-1401

New Fire on Manastash Ridge visible from Naches and Cle Elum

Naches WA— Monday afternoon crews responded to a smoke report on Manastash Ridge in Kittitas County, WA. As of Tuesday at noon, the un-named fire was reported to be approximately 25 acres in size near Shoestring Lake.

Cle Elum and Naches Ranger District fire managers have assigned two hand crews, smoke jumpers, rappellers, two helicopters, and a bulldozer to the fire. Firefighters spent the day getting access to the fire and establishing a safe anchor point. When conditions have allowed, crews have started to create direct and indirect fire line around the fire.

Smoke may be visible from the city of Cle Elum and along State Highway 410 on the Naches Ranger District. Forest visitors in the Manastash drainage or in the Little Naches drainage may see increased fire vehicle traffic and are asked to please drive slowly in these areas.

It is not posted on my usual link for this kind of stuff, www.inciweb.org where they have posted updates on the Conrad Lake fire over at Rimrock, which I am hoping to hit up Friday before the MnG......

Updated on http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3697/

The Manastash Ridge Fire started August 19th from a lightning strike that occurred on the weekend of August 9th. The fire is located on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest along Manastash Ridge, south of Shoestring Lake.

The fire is approximately 400 acres and is located on the Cle Elum Ranger District side of the ridge. In the afternoon, the fire can be visible from Cle Elum, Ellensburg, and Naches. Both the Cle Elum and the Naches Ranger Districts plan to issue area closures near the fire for public and firefighter safety. At this time the public is advised to stay out of the Manastash recreational area.

Yesterday crews established a safe anchor point and are proceeding on the flanks of the fire building direct and indirect line. There are approximately 50 personnel assigned to the fire including two handcrews, rapellers, smoke jumpers, and various air resources. Many crews are camping overnight in the area to have better access to the remote fire.

Fire managers are continuously monitoring the weather and fire behavior as warm and dry conditions are expected today through Thursday. Last night the fire was reported active until 1am. Forest managers remind recreationalist and other forest visitors that fire danger remains high and there are still campfire restrictions in place on both the Naches and Cle Elum Ranger District.

I'm still comin up........

Updates on all NW fires can be found at the link below...

http://www.nwccweb.us/information/fire_info.aspx#

Click on the Northwest Large Fire Interactive Map link to see how far the fire has burned (in red) and also to see satellite detected hot spots.

They have info on the Manastash & Rimrock fire.

I will be posting closure orders at trailheads in the morning. From the Naches side it will close everything from the Kaner thru the Funny Rocks. Some road closures too. The fire is now at 700+ acres. Heading towards Rocky Saddle. Trails have been overrun by fire. Hope this ends soon.

We're working on contingencies at the moment. No decision will be made for sure until sometime next week.

I am making plans to not bring my junk up there this trip...... :bang: Will be a last minute decision at this point.

Hope they can get this fire under control soon, word has it that its 700 acres now and they should have a decision about closing the entire forest this morning. Also their talking that the fire is burning in the ground and wont really be out until winter snows hit.......

All of them. Liberty, TSF, Evans. Not sure how feasible any of those are though due to the size of the group and permitting issues. We'll be keeping a close eye on all of this. Everybody go wash your cars and hope for rain. :roflmao:

Don't know if you guys have seen this or not, but check out this for a map of the fire area: http://www.arcgis.com/explorer/?open=ed0a7dad32fe4848b20c6f91c74c79ea

You need the MS Silverlight plugin for your browser. Zoom in on the fire to see the borders and area it's burning in overlaid on a map of the area. If you change the basemap you can even see satellite imagery with the fire area overlaid.

Not sure how up to date it is, but I used it pretty exensively to watch the Colockum Tarps fire over here and it was pretty accurate for that.

This morning's press release said 2320 acres now. They are using the 3100 road (Manastash Rd) for the North containment. A few friends were up there on Thursday and went around the fire via Barber Springs and down Gold Creek. You could see the flames from Pyramid Pass when it got dark.

The Funny Rocks and all trails approaching the area are closed. The Kaner is closed after the 3rd section. The area will not reopen in time for the M&G.
