Wheeling for Team Brady

Life is not always fair. Everyone has their ups and downs, their good times and bad, and to get through it, you honestly just have to suck it up and roll with it. We may think our problems are bad; your cell phone quit working, you broke a nail, or maybe you’re just frustrated that that person cut you off in the checkout line at the grocery store. While we sit here and stew over the little things in life, many others out there are just wishing to be healthy. That they wouldn’t have to take a cup full of pills each morning and evening, that staying at the hospital wasn’t a normal occurrence, or that they didn’t have to explain their condition to new acquaintances.
In the beginning of August, club member Brandon Marek was contacted by one of the clients they insure, Joe Black. Joe organizes fundraisers to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Each year he chooses a special child to put in the spotlight, and donates money to help fund the massive medical bills. Along with that, he takes it upon himself to plan a trip for the child to attend a place such as Disney Land, Disney World, Wild Waves, etc. This year the child chosen to receive special treatment, was 15 year old Brady Carroll. Brady is battling a very rare form of cancer, only a handful of cases have existed in the world. The cancerous mass in his abdomen has attached itself to his heart and lungs, meaning not all of it could be removed. They removed what they could and started trying to treat him. Chemotherapy does not help, unfortunately, so he is subject to experimental medications. At this point his prognosis is a mystery, but him, his family, and our club, all have very high hopes. Brady is an exceptional young man, and to be honest probably the strongest person I’ve ever met. He WILL beat this. I’m sure of it.
Brady, like the rest of us, has a passion for four wheel drives, but really loves jeeps in particular. All he wanted to do was go wheeling! Joe contacted Brandon, and asked if we could help make Brady’s wish a reality…and of course, who could say no?! Brandon and I brought it back to the club at our meeting and we all agreed that we would take him to Elbe Hills ORV Park on August 24th, 2014. We were very exclusive with who we invited, knowing that it needed to be a smooth, clean, relaxed run. Aside from our club, we had Logan Mueller of the Spanaway Moonshiners Jeep Club, and Dillon Greiwe of Watch This Fourwheelerz, a non-PNW4WDA club, join us on our Team Brady run. We had special “Team Brady” Outcast 4x4 shirts made up, provided lunch, and spent the day in the woods.
When we first got ready to take off on the trails and were figuring out who Brady’s family and friends were going to ride with, we thought we would throw Brady in with Logan, thinking that because of their age it would be a good match. Well once he was in that beautiful orange Scrambler, there was no way we were prying him out of it! We headed off and ran a few trails, and headed back to camp for lunch. We ate our lunch, swapped out passengers, and headed back up. About halfway into the Gotcha trail, Logan asked Brandon what he thought about letting Brady drive the Scrambler. Well of course we’re not going to say no! When Logan asked Brady if he wanted to drive, his smile was so big I was sure his face was hurting pretty bad! We then jumped back in and took off, with Brady leading the way. We finished off our day with going up to the bowl at the top of Elbe, and playing around a little bit. A few of us, myself included, took on the rock faces, Dillon was playing on the Rainier Vista Extension rock crawl, and some were just sitting on the sidelines, enjoying the entertainment. Jeff and Cassie Webber, two of our newest club members, got some great shots of everyone having a good ole’ time. After spending about an hour up at the top, watching a couple near rollovers, trying some new lines, and struggling to get Dillon un-stuck from the rocks, we headed back down to end our perfect day.
All of our lives changed that day. We made some incredible friends, took a young man’s wish and brought it to life, and will forever consider Brady and his family a part of our club. We hope to see him on the trail in the future, and be there when he needs us. He is a sensational person, and I truly admire his strength, optimism, and integrity. Keep fighting Brady.
