I have been meaning to make this trip for a very long time. I have some pictures, but not of every point along the way.

Vehicle for this trip is my recently acquired 1989 4runner. I'll likely post more about the rig at a later time, it cost 1400, and I've easily put twice that into it, still happy with the purchase though.

Headed out of Vancouver on Friday evening 10/18. Picked up my girlfriend and some groceries in Bend and we were back on the road by 11:30pm. Destination: someplace to camp. I thought we might end up along Hwy 20 somewhere short of reaching Burns, but the time flew by and we were in Burns before we knew it. Topped off on gas and Monster and back on the road.

Buoyed by energy drinks and great conversation, we arrived in Frenchglen around 3am. Apologies to everyone in Page Springs campground, we tried to be quiet as we setup camp and paid our $8 fee. I had completely forgotten to bring cash, so the scramble was on to find every silver coin in the vehicle/purse/pocket. We made it to $8, but not by much.

The sun was up and cooking us out of our tent in no time. Plan for the day was to drive the Steens Mountain Loop, head to Fields, and eventually find a hot springs to soak in.

First major attraction on the loop is Kiger Gorge.

On the southwest end of the loop we saw some of the wild Kiger mustangs. Too far away to get a pic with the camera phone though... Still great to see.

Arriving at the Fields Station, we hear the Alvord Hot Springs only accepts cash for their $5 fee, and the Station does not give cash back or have an ATM. This is starting to be a problem. We get directions to a couple possible overnight spots that are free. Settled on Willow Creek hot springs, 8 miles south on OR205, then 23 miles of gravel to the northeast.

Hot springs, divided into cooler and warmer

Warm side of the springs made for a good soak, then on the road south through Denio, NV to Bog Hot springs. A creek of extremely hot water. Here is a pic of the source, but it goes on for a long ways.

After dipping our feet in Bog Hot, we turn north again to Fields. This time with something of a plan. We need cash for the Alvord hot springs, Denio has an ATM, no cash in it, and no cash back at the Denio hotel/store/cafe/souvenir shop(just one store) either... We need to buy something for someone that has cash, no matter how disadvantaged the deal turns out for us.

While the attendant Woody pumped our gas in Fields, we discussed this dilemma with him. Woody suggests that the caretaker of Alvord likes beer, and could possibly trade soaking privileges for beer. I inquire of Woody if he himself likes beer, and indeed he does. An agreement is struck that Woody will get a half rack of beer for $10, and the beer is going on my card. Thanks to Woody for the trade, and for picking the cheapest half rack of beer!

From Fields it's northwest to the Alvord Hot Springs. With a quick detour to drive across the playa of the dry lake bed.

After playing on the playa, we check in and pay for our soak. Then off to setup camp before coming back for a soak beneath the stars. Absolutely fantastic, but just too dark for pics.

Here is camp in the early morning light, on the edge of the lake bed.

Steens to the west.

Back to the Alvord hot springs for one more quick soak before hitting the road.

Three days was barely enough time. There is a lot more to explore down there...

I updated the first two, if that sticks for a while I will do the rest. I'm assuming the album works for everybody? What a PITA.

4runner did great. Front tires are wearing a little wonky since I replaced the outer tire rod ends, must not have gotten them exactly to the original length. Need to get it aligned, but I want to change out the lower control arm bushings and at least check the balljoints first.
