I've been looking online for the last couple of years trying to find a great deal on a M416 trailer.
I wasn't finding many in any type of good shape for under $1,500.00.
I started drawing up plans to build one from the ground up.
Then last week one showed up online, $500.00, and BOOM!!!

It is now disassembled and ready for sand blasting next week.
More to come....

Picked up the tub after being sandblasted today.
No rust through at all, came out perfect.
Now I have some dents to smooth out.
Then I am adding a square rail over the round tubing at the rim. The square rail will make for a better place for a lid to sit on.
I will be using inch and a quarter square tube with ¼ wall.
After that it will spray a coat of primer so it doesn't start rusting. At that point I can move on to beefing up the frame.
More to come...

Yeah, pretty excited. Going with the Cascade roof top tent (Mckinley version).
vasalating between trailready wheels and robby gordon wheels for the jeep and trailer (matching) right now - need 7 of them.
Also looking at different options for solar panels, suitcase welder, water pump, and gas + water storage.
I hope to be done before the end of the year, but we'll see.....

I can beat any deal you'll find on Trailready's. Don't buy Chinese wheels. :)

As an update:
- Picked up 6000 pound Dexter axle 3500 pound hubs with electric brakes. It is 4 inches wider than the stock m416 axle. The axle was custom made by dexter with ¼ wall tube. I sanded it, sprayed it down with etching primer and hit it with rattle can black. Still need to weld the spring mounts on though.
- Picked up the springs with brass bushings and all hardware to mount the springs.
- Picked up some 1.5, 3/16th wall square tube. I am cutting one side off then fitting it over the round tube at the top of the trailer rim. This will make a better surface for the lid I will build to come in contact with.
- Picked up 3/16 plate and cut it to utilize to box in the C channel frame. Also purchased 2x3 ¼ wall to use as the tongue to replace the thin stamped C channel tongue. I also used some of the 2x3 tube to make a new rear cross member and pushed a hitch receiver through it (still need to weld it up) just in case I want to take the bikes, or hang those hitch mounted chairs from it, and to utilize it as a winch point if needed. I am cutting up gussets as well and will be using them all over....

I made some more headway.. I have the new rim all welded on. Built the skeleton for the lid. Cut out the rear cross member on the frame and installed 2x3 ¼ crossmember with tow hitch in place. I was going to use the receiver as a place to put a shackle, or bike carriers, etc.... Also started boxing in the frame with 3/16 plate, adding gussets, etc... Slow going....
Here's a few pics...

Made a little more headway this past weekend before I ran out of shielding gas.
Used 14 gauge sheet metal to skin the frame for the lid. I still have some welding to do on it.
I have the hinges, lock, and two locking compression latches to weld on to the lid as well.

I worked on the frame a little more today. I built a new tongue out of 2x3 ¼ wall tubing. I also stretch the tongue about 34in longer than the original M416 tongue length. In one of the pics below I placed the old tongue in its original position for comparison. The stretch will help out in a few ways, turning since my spare tire almost hits the trailer in stock form and also allows me to put a lockable tongue box on. I need to massage it into place and weld it in next...

Made a little more headway this weekend.
I welded on the spring mounts and then reinforced them so they will slide over obstacles a little easier...
Next up is welding on the spring perches to the axle....

With the holidays I haven't made much more headway.
A few accessories came in though.
- Hinges for the lid
- Lock for the lid
- 4 interior led lights
- 6 exterior led lights
- Upper and lower shock mounts
- Custom Switch Pod for battery bank on trailer...
I should be able to make some more headway in the next 2 weeks..

Picked up a few more pieces today:
Trailer and Jeep wiring.
I also found a much beefier shackle than what originally came with my spring kit.
The original kit had 1/4 thick shackles and no grease fitting.
The new kit has 1/2 thick shackles with grease fittings..

Got lucky this week.
My wheels on the Jeep (Eagle Alloy 540's) are no longer made so I was just going to go with new wheels.
Found 4 of my wheels on craigslist and picked them up cheap.... For now I will run these (at least they match), then down the road I will swap up to something different, i.e. beadlocks...

I made some good progress today.
I welded up the Masterlock pad so I can now secure the inside contents of the trailer.
I used some 1¾ 120 wall tubing I had laying around as a handle.
Lastly, I welded up the hinges..
All-in-all a pretty good day..
Still much to do....

I hate to be the one to say it but..... You should put the lock on the trailer the other way. Put it on the trailer so that the key is down to try and avoid mud, water, snow and ice from plunging up the lock.
It would suck to get all the way to you destination and not be able to get your trailer unlocked.

I saw that too but hadn't had a chance to post up, Also why not keep it simple and set it up for a regular pad lock? I use these on my Jeep Trailer so I only have to keep one set of keys with me

I appreciate it, I have a round rubber cover (unused black cap) I was going to use to keep the elements out so I figured I would mount it key hole up.
Also the locking plate fit better and would not protrude down past the railing. Had I mounted it the "normal" way it would have protruded down about 1 ½ inches.
Good call out though, it will be water tight.
I appreciate the feedback on the project, keep it coming.
Any other ideas on things would be great.
thank you again.

I liked the protection around the 3" padlock. It is harder to get to and with the tube handle up in front of it beating it loose with a sledge hammer will be much harder. Also having a standard padlock bouncing around is not cool. With the bracket around the 3" round padlock the setup also looks much cleaner versus a padlock and hasp.
The biggest concern would be having the lock picked. These particular master lock models are easy to pick with the right tools (check out youtube). I will upgrade to a American 6 pin lock or one of their double sided locks down the road. The Masterlock came with the bracket.

I used Duplicolors etching primer to spray down the trailer today. Next step is using some filler primer and then sanding.....

Alright, picking up tires tomorrow (Friday) for the trailer.
I have narrowed it down to one of the below two:

BFG KM2 - Price for 2 mounted $562.00

GoodYear Wrangler Kevlar MT/R's - Price for 2 mounted $617.00

Whichever I choose above I will also eventually put them on the Jeep.
I have read some articles online and now I am looking for some local opinions from you. Any experience with either on in Evans Creek, Naches Trail, etc in dry and snow conditions....and long hauls to Moab, SW Colorado (San Juan's), etc..
I am leaning towards the wranglers, since they look like they would fit my two important categories 1) highway handling 2) wheeling through deep snow (my personal favorite, pushing snow with the front grill/bumper).

THOUGHTS / SUGGESTIONS???

thank you ahead of time for any feedback...
