Anyone ever tow using a extended hitch or some type of extension?

Would like to be able to tow my 3,500lb trailer with my tailgate open. Need a foot or so of extension. Seems like most in that length are still rated at over 5k.

Pro's/Con's?

It all depends on the tow rig you are using. Anytime you increase the distance between rear axle centerline of the tow rig to hitch ball it only serves to decrease towing stability. If you are using a long wheel base full size truck to tow 3500 lbs, then the effects will be small.

Yes. I use to use an extension WITH A WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCH when I had the camper and 20' enclosed trailer.

At first, I used an off the shelf 18" extension. I had a steel plate welded on it so I could add binder chains for more support.

I eventually upgraded to a super hitch then had an extension made because it seemed better built than the ones you can buy.

Here is a pic of the first setup I used.

I was probably pushing the weight rating a bit but I never had an issue. That's also why I added the chains. ImageImage

I have a Superhitch and 24 inch extension, but that would run you around $1k. Probably overkill for 3500 lbs and a 1 foot extension.

I have a fancy super hitch extension I got for free. But no double hole super hitch to install it on. Thought about getting one but kind of over kill like you said.

Overkill is under rated! Especially when towing.
